Tigers complete sweep of UAH
Power play wakes up in 5-3 victory

Chad Rau
Unable to cash in on the man advantage for five periods over the weekend, Colorado College’s power play came through in the nick of time on Saturday.

Freshman defenseman Gabe Guentzel and sophomore winger Stephen Schultz scored power-play goals just 78 seconds apart early in the third period, sparking the Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville and a sweep of their two-game series at the World Arena.

Guentzel’s first career red lighter, a rising slap shot through traffic from the right point, snapped a 2-2 tie just 1:28 after UAH had pulled even for the second time in the game. Schultz’ deflection less than a minute and a half later ended up being the game winner, as the scrappy Chargers kept things interesting with a four-on-four tally with 5:42 left to play.

Chad Rau, who also collected a pair of assists, iced the triumph with an empty-net goal with 9.2 seconds remaining.

Guentzel added an assist on a first-period goal by senior winger Eric Walsky, while junior defenseman Brian Connelly set up both of the pivotal power-play markers. Junior defenseman Nate Prosser also lit the lamp for the Tigers, who out-shot UAH by a 41-20 margin and held the visitors scoreless on nine power plays. CC finished 2-for-7 after going 0-9 in Friday's 1-0 victory.

Brennan Barker and Andrew Coburn each had a goal and an assist for Alabama-Huntsville, which got a 36-save performance from junior netminder Blake MacNicol. Senior goalie Drew O’Connell finished with 17 stops for Colorado College.

1950 NCAA Championship Game

Roaring to its first national championship in March 1950, the CC hockey team turned a close game into a nightmare for Boston University by scoring 10 times in the third period of a 13-4 victory at the old Broadmoor Ice Palace. The two goals by Tony Frasca and Cam Berry in this video clip – at the expense of All-NCAA Tournament goaltender Ike Bevins – came just 15 seconds apart and were part of a rampage that saw the Tigers strike for seven tallies in a span of 6:50 on the official game clock. Believe it or not, BU actually led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play in this title game. (more »)(« less)
