Kevin Ecke scored 2:58 into overtime to give the Colorado College men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Westminster College in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at CC’s Stewart Field.
The sophomore forward pounced on a loose ball on the right side of the box and sent a shot through traffic into the open net for his first career game-winning goal.
Jimmer Comerford sent the ball into the Griffin’s box and Ben Hancock was able to keep the play alive at the right post just before WC goalkeeper Valan Campbell could punch the ball away.
Ecke’s goal ended a scoring drought which had reached 275:15 since Berk Korustan scored the game winner with 2:17 remaining in the victory at Southwestern University on Oct. 3.
The game was played in a steady northeast wind which sent the wind chill far below the game-time temperature of 46 degrees. But the game became extremely heated in the second half.
The Tigers’ Logan Boccard was not given a penalty shot despite being pulled down from behind on a breakaway in the Westminster penalty area, much to the dismay of the CC coaches and players.
With 14:05 remaining in regulation, Westminster’s Isaac Green was given a red card for “foul and abusive language,” which had an even more severe effect on the Griffin’s because they had to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
Colorado College had a 21-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Playing with the wind in the second half, the Tigers had 13 shots compared to only two for the Griffins.
Playing into the wind in overtime, CC had the only two shots.
Brian Engle made just one save in the first half while improving to 6-1-0 overall and posting his third shutout of the season. Campbell had five saves for Westminster.
Colorado College will return to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action next Friday when the Tigers play host to DePauw University at 3:30 p.m. on Stewart Field.
