Marty Sertich
Marty Sertich may be coming back to famiiar territory.

Sertich, who led the nation in scoring and won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as a junior at Colorado College in 2004-05, was acquired by the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday in a trade with the Dallas Stars.

He never actually played for Dallas, spending the last two seasons with its top affiliate, the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League.

The 5-9, 165-pound center led Iowa in scoring this past campaign, collecting 52 points (27g,25a) in 79 games. He also led the team in goals and power-play goals, with nine.

The Avalanche gave up a conditional draft choice in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Sertich, now 25 years old.

In his four seasons with the Tigers, Sertich amassed 182 career points (61g,121a) in 166 games to finish his career ranked No. 12 on CC’s all-time scoring list. He collected 64 of those (27g,37a) in 2004-05, helping Colorado College reach the NCAA Frozen Four after earning a share of the WCHA regular-season championship.

In addition to winning the Hobey Baker Award that season, he was a first-team All-American, then emerged as a top-10 Hobey finalist again a year later. He and teammate Brett Sterling both were top-three finalists in 2005.

A native of Roseville, Minn., Sertich graduated from CC in May 2006 before signing with Dallas as a free agent on July 10 of that year. His dad, Steve Sertich ‘74, and maternal grandfather, Tony Frasca ‘52, also were standout hockey players at Colorado College.

1950 NCAA Championship Game

Roaring to its first national championship in March 1950, the CC hockey team turned a close game into a nightmare for Boston University by scoring 10 times in the third period of a 13-4 victory at the old Broadmoor Ice Palace. The two goals by Tony Frasca and Cam Berry in this video clip – at the expense of All-NCAA Tournament goaltender Ike Bevins – came just 15 seconds apart and were part of a rampage that saw the Tigers strike for seven tallies in a span of 6:50 on the official game clock. Believe it or not, BU actually led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play in this title game. (more »)(« less)
