Elizabeth “Liz” Campbell, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Oglethorpe University, was named head coach of the Colorado College women’s basketball team, Director of Athletics Ken Ralph announced today.

“We are excited that Liz will be joining the athletics family at Colorado College,” Ralph said. “Her experience, energy, and passion for basketball, combined with her knowledge of the SCAC, make her the perfect choice to lead the program. The Tiger basketball program is in very good hands for many years to come.”

Campbell helped guide the Stormy Petrels to a school record 27-7 mark and an appearance in the Division III national semifinals during the 2007-08 campaign. Oglethorpe was second in the Eastern Division of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a program-best 11-3 record and finished second in the SCAC tournament.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach at Colorado College and flattered that Ken Ralph and the search committee entrusted me with the women’s basketball program,” Campbell said. “I cannot wait to get started building a successful program at CC. There are pieces in place and in their first year in the conference this team demonstrated that they can compete in the very tough SCAC.”

Campbell also was an integral part of the Oglethorpe athletics department. She was named senior woman administrator in Sept., 2004, and faculty representative to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in Nov., 2004. In January, 2005, she was named assistant athletic director for administration.

Campbell graduated cum laude from Oglethorpe in 2001 with a degree in history and a teaching certificate. She earned her master’s in sports administration from Georgia State University in 2004.

While attending Oglethorpe she made the SCAC honor roll all four years, was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma (athletic honor society) and received the Stormiest Petrel Award.

“I am delighted for Liz Campbell,” said Oglethorpe Athletic Director Jay Gardiner. “She has been a wonderful asset to the Oglethorpe athletics department for the past five years as a coach, administrator and mentor to our student-athletes. Although we will sorely miss her, I am confident that Colorado College will be thrilled with the exuberance and dedication Liz brings to the job every day.”

Campbell succeeds Kelly Mahlum, who resigned from the position in March.
