The No. 13 Colorado College volleyball team dropped its final match of the regular season to Division II Colorado State University – Pueblo, 3-1. The Tigers honored their five seniors Tuesday evening as they played in their final home match of their career in Reid Gymnasium. The seniors that were honored included:
Meredith Ballard,
Haley Hamilton,
Sarah Schmoker,
Amy Schornack and
Hannah Varnell.
Colorado College dropped the first two sets to CSU-Pueblo with identical 26-24 scores. The Tigers had a three-point lead in both sets, but were unable to keep it as the Thunderwolves battled back each time to win the sets.
Down two sets, CC rallied back in the third set to win 25-18. The Tigers went on a 12-3 run early in the third set to take an eight point lead, which included six kills by the CC offense. The Tigers showed a strong presence at the net with five blocks, while holding the Thunderwolves to a -.072 hitting percentage.
CC was unable to keep the momentum going into the fourth set as it dropped the final set, 25-22.
The Tigers had three players get double-doubles in the game. Junior
Laura Goldsmith led the Tigers with a career-high 18 points and a team-high 17 digs. Schornack had a team-high 43 assists and added 13 digs, while freshman
Kristen Liberty added 14 kills and 11 digs.
Hamilton had a team-high three blocks in her final home game, while freshman
Randi Braak added another three blocks on defense for CC. Varnell came up with 15 digs on defense to aid the back row.
The Tigers are now 28-6 on the season, while the Thunderwolves improved to 14-11.
CC will travel to Jackson, Miss. for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship on Nov. 4-5. The Tigers enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and earned a first round bye. CC awaits the winner of the No. 7 Centre College vs. No. 10 Rhodes College match at 6 p.m. MT on Friday.
