Colorado College rallied to defeat Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon in the last of three matches against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents this weekend in San Antonio.
The Tigers won the top four singles matches to post a 5-4 victory over the Pirates for their second win in three matches on the road trip.
Tyler Fox and
Thomas Modern each posted a pair of victories to put CC in a position to win the match, but the outcome was not decided until the
Brian Thirkell came through at No. 1 singles.
Fox and Modern combined for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Tigers were behind heading into singles action for the 14th time in 19 matches. This time, however, CC would not be denied.
Modern was in complete control of his match at No. 3 singles, losing just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Fox was almost as dominant, recording a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 2 match.
Evan Jonker gave the Tigers a fourth point by posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
The match was essentially square with the Pirates comfortably head in the No. 5 and No.6 singles matches, which meant the match would come down to whoever won at No. 1 singles.
It didn't look good after Thirkell lost the first game 6-0, but he eventually gained control in the second set and went on to post a 6-4 and force the match to a third set. He maintained the momentum in the final set and posted a convincing 6-1 win to give the Tigers a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
Colorado College will play host to Metropolitan State College on Tuesday in its final match before next weekend's SCAC Championships.
