Morrison saves the day for Tigers

Goalie's 26 saves helps CC beat Wheaton

Saving her best for last, Lindsay Morrison gave Colorado College the lift it needed on Friday evening.

The senior goaltender stopped 26 of 32 shots, backstopping the Tigers to an 8-6 victory over Wheaton College in their third and final preliminary-round game at the Midwest Championships in St. Paul, Minn.

CC, which suffered a pair of losses to tournament host Macalester College (10-3) and Carthage College (12-7) earlier in the day, will take on top-seeded Macalester again in Saturday's first semifinal contest, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. CDT at Leonard Natatorium. Carthage and Wheaton meet in the other semifinal, with the regional consolation and championship games to follow later in the day.

Liz Weber scored all four of her goals in the first half against WC, as the Tigers built a 5-1 cushion after two quarters. Karen Friefeld scored twice, while Emily Fukunaga and Malia Vitousek struck once each in the triumph.

Colorado College also got off to a strong start in its middle match on Friday, jumping out to a 3-2 lead after the opening period, but couldn't sustain the pressure in the 12-7 loss to Carthage.

Weber and Vitousek each scored twice against the Lady Reds after tallying once apiece against Macalester. Joycie Hunter, who had a goal in the opening contest against the Scots, recorded three steals in each game. Morrison was credited with 14 saves in the two early outings.
