Colorado College dropped a 7-2 decision against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Sewanee on Monday morning, and then saw its afternoon match against Hardin-Simmons University suspended because there were no lights on the courts.
In the battle of the Tigers, Natalie Donnelly and Erin Yamamoto posted an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles to keep CC within a point heading into the singles matches.
Britt Swenson earned Colorado College's second point with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles, but that proved to be the last victory the team would post.
Deanna Thirkell and Donnelly dropped three-set decisions in super tie-breakers at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Thirkell lost 7-5, 6-7 (10-0), 10-8, while Donnelly fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
CC also was only one service break away from a victory at No. 1 doubles, where Swenson and Jordan Evans came out on the wrong side of an 8-6 count.
“This was a very disappointing result because all of our matches were winnable,” head coach Perry Wright said. “It was great that Britt was able to regain some confidence and come away with the win. She did a great job managing her focus and emotions throughout the match.”
The Hardin-Simmons match was tied at 2-2 when play was stopped. Deanna Thirkell and Tori March posted an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, while Jordan Evans registered a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 victory at no. 1 singles.
Britt Swenson was leading her No. 3 singles match 6-2, 4-4, while Thirkell and Donnelly were tied after two sets at no. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively.
“Tori coming in and playing doubles was a great addition,” Wright said. “She and
Deanna were able to implement their game plan well, which gave us a
much needed point from the doubles round.
“In singles, it appeared that we were going to eek out a win, but unfortunately it was getting too dark to see the ball. It was really unfortunate because the team really needed a win to build confidence. Jordan played a very well composed singles match, which was
encouraging after the morning match.”
Colorado College will complete its Spring Break trip in Southern California with a match against Salisbury University on Tuesday morning.
