Jaden Schwartz already was a highly touted recruit long before Friday's NHL draft.
But now Schwartz will bring even more impressive credentials when he arrives at Colorado College later this summer.
The St. Louis Blues made Jaden, the younger brother of CC sophomore-to-be
Rylan Schwartz, their
No. 1 choice and 14th pick overall in the opening round.
Playing for the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League in 2009-10,
Jaden Schwartz claimed the USHL scoring crown with 83 points (33-50–83) in 60 regular-season games, becoming the youngest player in 27 years to accomplish the feat. It also was the league's highest point total since 2001-02.
He eventually was named a USHL first-team all-star and was honored as Offensive Player of the Year.
Schwartz is one of eight incoming freshmen expected to report to training camp with the Tigers in September, and would be the highest NHL draft pick ever to play for Colorado College. Boston Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart, who turned pro after his junior season at CC in 2004-05, was a 21st overall selection in the first round in 2003.
Mandi Schwartz, older sister of Jaden and Rylan, is a member of the women's varsity team at Yale University. The Schwartz family resides in Wilcox, Saskatchewan.
Another future Tiger – defenseman Peter Stoykewych of Winnipeg, Manitoba – was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the seventh round (199th overall) on Saturday. The 6-2, 188-pound Stoykewych, who won't enroll at Colorado College until fall of 2011, collected 31 points (6g,25a) last season for the Winnipeg South Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He'll spend the 2010-11 campaign with the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers, a team coached by former CC assistant Mike Guentzel.
