CC cagers fall just shy in California

Tigers suffer 61-59 setback to Wisconsin-Platteville in West Coast opener

Box Score Colorado College came up just a bucket short in the opener of its three-game swing through Southern California on Saturday.

The Tigers saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, dropping a 61-59 decision to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in a neutral-court contest at the University of La Verne.

CC, now 4-4 for the season, got 12 points apiece from its backcourt duo of junior Ryan Milne and freshman Justin Berardino. Sophomore forward Chris Lesnansky, the team's leading scorer so far in 2012-13, chipped in with 11 but fouled out with 6:33 left to play.

After a free throw by Berardino gave Colorado College its final lead of the night with less than two minutes remaining, at 55-54, the Pioneers quickly regained the advantage and held on to improve to 10-3. A steal by junior Chas Cross, one of six UW-Platteville players with eight or more points in the victory, destroyed the Tigers' hopes in the waning moments.

Senior forward Rob Stallion paced the winners with 11 points while guards Eric Gerber and Jim Stocki sank nine apiece. It was a pair of charity tosses by Stocki with 15 ticks showing on the clock that proved to be the difference.

The Tigers resume their West Coast trip on Sunday, taking on Occidental College at 2:30 p.m. (PT) in nearby Orange, Calif., before meeting Chapman University there at 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Monday.
