Sophomore guard
Ryan Milne scored 14 of his 19 points during the second half, but Colorado College could not overcome a 15-point deficit during the final nine minutes and dropped a 64-53 decision to Rhodes College in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Friday night.
The Lynx appeared to be in complete command after Joey Miller gave his team a 45-30 lead with 8:18 to play, but Milne scored seven points during a 14-5 run that that pulled the Tigers to within six points with 2:36 still to play.
Andrew Gallow gave Rhodes the breathing room it needed by draining a three-pointer from the left wing on its next possession, and the Lynx sealed the victory by making nine of 10 free throws during final 1:41.
Junior forward
Ian Rewoldt recorded his fifth double-double of the season by matching his season high of 17 points for the third time and grabbing 10 rebounds. Freshman forward
Chris Lesnansky, however, was whistled for five fouls in just 22 minutes and recorded just nine points and five rebounds before being sent to the bench with 6:41 remaining in the game.
Rhodes converted on 21 of 25 visits to the charity stripe, including 15 of 19 during the second half to break open a tight game. At the other end, the Tigers made 8-of-11 free throws.
Kory Kilpatrick paced the Lynx with a game-high 20 points, while Patrick Mcgrail and Theo Hartwell added 15 and 14, respectively.
Trailing just 23-21 at the break, Colorado College missed its first seven field goal attempts to open the second half and could only watch as RC extended its lead to nine points on the strength of an 8-1 run.
CC made just 12 of 32 shots from the floor during the second half. Rhodes connected on 12-of-23 field-goal attempts in the final 20 minutes, but its 15 second-half free throws proved to be the difference in the game.
The Tigers took their only lead of the game at 11-9 after Rewoldt scored on a layup 6:16 into the contest. Kilpatrick scored half his team's points during an 8-0 run to give the Lynx a 17-11 lead with 6:26 to play before the break.
Colorado College trailed 21-16 with 1:45 remaining in the first half, but sophomore forward
Daniel Webb canned a three-pointer from the top of the key and Rewoldt scored in the paint 59 seconds later to cap a 5-2 spurt that pulled the Tigers to within two points after 20 minutes.
CC finished the season with a 12-13 overall record. Rhodes improved to 18-8 and will face Trinity University the second men's semifinal game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
