CC looks to start new winning streak on the road

Weekly Release No. 7

Colorado College looks to start a new winning streak this week when it continues the longest stretch of road games this season with contests at Conference USA rivals University of Tulsa and SMU.

In fact, 2012 marks the first time since joining the league as an affiliate member in 2006 that the Tigers have opened their C-USA slate with four consecutive road dates. CC played four straight conference games on the road in both 2009 (2-2-0) and 2010 (1-3-0), but those contests occurred during the middle of the schedule.

The Tigers enter Friday night's match-up with the Golden Hurricane sporting a 6-2-3 overall record and a 1-1-0 mark in C-USA. Colorado College, which is tied for fourth place in the conference standings after defeating Marshall (2-1) and falling at East Carolina (1-0), is 2-2-1 away from home in 2012. That includes its season-opening victory over the University of Denver (1-0) in the Colorado Cup on a neutral field at the University of Northern Colorado.

Tulsa is 4-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in C-USA after losing at Rice (1-0) and tying Houston (0-0). SMU takes a 4-5-1 overall record and a 0-1-1 conference mark into Friday's game at UTEP after tying Houston (2-2) and falling at Rice (3-2).

Colorado College leads the all-time series with Tulsa by a 10-2-1 count, including a 5-1-0 edge in conference games. The teams are tied 2-2-1 in the five previous meetings on the Hurricane's home pitch. CC has won three straight games, including a 4-1 victory last season, since dropping a 2-1 decision at Tulsa in 2008.

The Tigers have won three out of the last four matches against SMU to take a 10-8-0 edge in the series. Colorado College recorded a 1-0 victory last year at Stewart Field to avenge a 3-1 loss a year earlier in Dallas, where the teams are all square at 4-4-0.

CC remains third among league teams in scoring offense, at 2.20 goals per game, as well as in goals-against average at 0.77. Sophomore Jessie Ayers, the reigning C-USA Midfielder of the Year, leads the Tigers with career highs of five goals and 12 points. Junior midfielder Madison Whitehead is second with personal highs of four goals and nine points, while sophomore midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis and senior forward Brittney Lyman are next with eight points apiece.

Freshman Kate Scheele has started seven games in goal, posting a 3-1-3 record with three shutouts. She owns a 0.89 GAA and a .833 saves percentage. Senior Hanna Berglund has won three of her four starts and has a 0.60 GAA and a .800 saves percentage.

With her assist on Ayers' game-winning goal at Marshall, Lyman moved into sole possession of 14th place on the program's all-time points list with 51. With one more point, she will join Ann Cernicek (1984-87) and Amara Wilson (2004-07) at No. 13.

Lyman already is tied with Tara Nott (1990-93) and Karen Willoughby (1985-88) for ninth place with 21 career goals, and needs only one more assist to become the 28th player in school history to reach double figures. Lyman has factored in on nine game winners during her four seasons, scoring five and assisting on four others.

When Froetscher set up the game-tying goal by Ayers last Friday, it was more than a positive sign for Colorado College. The Tigers improved to 8-0 all-time when she has recorded a point.

Froetscher has been involved in four game winners in less than two full seasons, scoring one and setting up three others. She scored the GWG in the 2012 season opener against Denver and assisted on the 'Golden Goal' in her collegiate debut, a 1-0 overtime victory against the University of Dayton in 2010.

Colorado College opens a season-long four-game home stand when it plays host to defending C-USA champion University of Memphis on Friday, Oct. 5, and UAB on Sunday, Oct. 7.
