DeGayner to race in three events at NCAAs

Jordan DeGayner became the first Colorado College men's swimmer since Howie Silleck in 2000 to qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships and will race in three freestyle events.

The psych sheets for the 2010 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center were announced today.

DeGayner's first event will be the 50-yard freestyle on Wednesday, March 17.

The following day, DeGayner will race in the 200 free, the event in which he won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title in a school-record time of 1:40.14. That mark was just .40 seconds off the automatic qualifying time, but 1.27 seconds faster than the minimum “B” cut.

It also will be the first time DeGayner, who is ranked sixth in the 200 free, will go up against DePauw's John Cook. The two swimmers split the 200 and 100 freestyles at the SCAC championships, finishing 1-2 in each event. Kenyon College's Ian Stewart Bates' mark of 1:39.16 is the top qualifying time in the 200 free, which is the seventh event on Thursday, March 18.

DeGayner has a day off to prepare for his final race, the 100 free. DeGayner broke Silleck's record which had stood since 2001 by .21 seconds at the SCAC championships. DeGayner's time of 46.06 ranks 21st in the field. Kalamazoo's Craig Fleming owns the top time at 44.87, while Cook ranks No. 9 at 45.36. The 100 free is the first event on Saturday, March 20.
