Box Score Christabel Oduro broke a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute to give the University of Memphis a 2-1 victory over Colorado College in a key Conference USA matchup on Sunday afternoon at Mike Rose Stadium.
“I'm very proud of our effort today,” head coach
Geoff Bennett said. “We came out with a lot of energy and played with a lot more intensity and passion against an undefeated and nationally ranked Memphis team. We know this is the type of effort the team and program needs to put in day in and day out.”
Memphis took its first lead in the 29th minute when Kelly Gravlin jumped on a loose ball at the top of the box and found the lower right corner of the net.
Colorado College tied the game five minutes later when freshman midfielder
Jessie Ayers converted on the first penalty kick of her career. Ayers' goal was just the third allowed by Memphis in the first half of a game this season.
CC nearly took the lead in the 61st minute when
Brittney Lyman put a header on net after Elise Kuhar-Pitters came off her line to play the shot, but the Memphis goalkeeper recovered in time to grab the ball just as it reached the goal line for one of her two saves.
Less than a minute later, Oduro put the home team ahead to stay when she took a feed from Melissa Smith and slipped a low shot past
Hanna Berglund at the right post for her eighth goal of the season.
Colorado College nearly scored off a
Beth Wright corner kick in the 35th minute, but the Memphis defense prevented a header by
Kelsey Wise from finding the net.
“We're obviously disappointed with the result,” Bennett said. “We felt we played well enough to win, but we missed a couple of scoring opportunities.”
Berglund finished with five saves for the CC, which slipped to 7-6-3 overall and 5-2-1 in C-USA.
Colorado College plays host to SMU and the University of Tulsa next Friday and Sunday, respectively, in the final home games of the 2011 season.
