Jaden Schwartz repeats as team MVP

Rapuzzi elected team captain for 2012-13 as Tigers start to look ahead

David Civitarese, Nick Dineen and Jaden Schwartz were honored as repeat winners on Sunday afternoon at the Colorado College hockey team's season-ending awards brunch at the Marriott Hotel.

The annual event celebrated a 2011-12 campaign in which the Tigers posted an overall winning record of 18-16-2 and hosting a first-round WCHA playoff series for the 17th time in the last 19 years.

Left wing Schwartz, currently with the St. Louis Blues of the NHL, was named recipient of both the M.B. Hopper Award as top scorer as well as the Thayer Tutt Award as most valuable player for the second consecutive season. A first-team AHCA/CCM West America selection, he paced Colorado College with 41 points (15g,26a), tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals and assisted on three others in just 30 games as a sophomore in 2011-12.

Civitarese, who joined the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League soon after his senior season at CC came to a close in early March, took home the Paul Markovich Award as the team's top student for the second straight year. A physics major, he is a three-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete and member of the league's All-Academic Team.

Dineen claimed the Steve Ebert Award – recognizing a combination of dedication, desire, ability and sportsmanship – for the second year in a row. While wearing the “C” as senior team captain in '11-12, he posted career highs with 14 goals, 12 assists and 26 points. Four of his tallies also were game winners before he went on to finish out the season with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL.

Senior defenseman Gabe Guentzel, another Tiger who launched his professional career this spring after signing with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch, claimed the Rodman Award presented each year to a relatively unheralded player demonstrating the highest degree of sportsmanship. The award is named after Dr. Hugh Rodman and his wife, Crete, who founded it in 1980.

Also receiving recognition at Sunday's ceremony were sophomore winger Alexander Krushelnyski and sophomore goaltender Josh Thorimbert, who emerged as co-winners of the Dave Peterson Award as CC's most improved players. Freshman defenseman Aaron Harstad snagged the Bob Johnson Award as rookie of the year.

Ray Werner, retired economics professor and former WCHA faculty representative at Colorado College, was honored with the Joni Brandner Memorial Award. That award, initiated in 2002, is presented annually to individuals who have given their heart and soul through dedication to Tiger Hockey.

Right wing William Rapuzzi, elected by unanimous vote, will serve as team captain in 2012-13 while center Rylan Schwartz  joins defensemen Joe Marciano and Eamonn McDermott as alternates. All except McDermott, currently a sophomore, will be seniors starting next fall.

Award winners Guentzel, Krushelnyski and McDermott joined Civitarese among 11 CC players earning Academic All-WCHA recognition this season.
