Junior Leah Wessler captured her second consecutive individual title and the Colorado College women's cross country team successfully defended its team title at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at Stone Creek Golf Club in Sherman, Texas. The Tigers had six runners finish in the top 10 and scored 25 points, 16 better than second-place Trinity University.

Wessler, who was CC's first-ever individual champion last season, became the first female runner to defend the SCAC title since Natalie Shaffer of DePauw University in 2003 and '04 by covering the 6k course in 24 minutes, 8.2 seconds. She finished 15 seconds ahead of Brianna Timourian of Southwestern University. Emma MacEachern of Trinity finished third.

"Leah ran a great race today," head coach Ted Castaneda said. "Our plan was to see how things were at the two-mile mark and things were good, so she just kept doing what she was doing. She just maintained and stayed focused throughout the entire race. I am very proud of her."

CC won the meet by placing five other runners in the top 10. Junior Katie Sandfort (24.33.5) and freshmen Leah Veldhuisen (24:35.5) and Allysa Warling (24.39.2) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Juniors Allie Crimmins (25:04.5) and Stefani Messick (25:28.9) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, to clinch the team title.

"The entire team really went after it today," Castaneda said. "We had great grouping  and stayed out front the whole time. We didn't want anyone to slow us down and we didn't let them."

In addition to the six runners that finished in the top 10, juniors Patty Atkinson and Corey Luna also earned all-conference honors by finishing 13th and 14th, respectively. The eight all-conference performers are the most ever by either the men's or women's cross country teams at CC.
