Tigers Edge UNC In Season Opener

Box Score A pair of young Tigers came through in the clutch to help Colorado College defeat the University of Northern Colorado, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Stewart Field.

First-year midfielder Lauren Milliet struck for the game-winning goal in the 71st minute and sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie made three of her five saves during the final 11 minutes to record the shutout in her first career appearance.

After generating several quality scoring chances early in the second half, CC finally broke through with a sequence that began when senior defender Samantha Zarling took the ball from Carolyn Cox approximately 30 yards away from the net.

Zarling sent a through ball to Sarah Schweiss, who was waiting in the center of the field just outside the box, and the senior midfielder slipped the ball to Milliet, who rifled a high shot into the top right corner from 22 yards out.

Milliett became the first Tiger freshman to record a game winner goal in her first collegiate game since 2010 when Lauren DiGregorio struck 1:23 into overtime to give the Tigers a 1-0 victory over the University of Dayton.

Schweiss climbed into 19th place on the program's career list with 12 assists and sole possession of 19th place with 46 points.

Mackenzie preserved the shutout with 2:23 remaining when she made a diving stop on a shot by senior forward Essence Ortiz-Laneir from the center of the box.

The sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., also got some timely help from her back line with just over 13 minutes remaining when Maddie Roberts touched the ball around CC's keeper on the left side, but her cross toward teammate Mariel Gutierrez was cleared away by senior midfielder Alexis Long.

Mackenzie became the first Colorado College goalkeeper to record a clean sheet in her first collegiate start since Kate Scheele stopped four shots in a 1-0 triumph over the University of Denver in the 2012 season opener.

The Tigers, who had eight underclassmen in the starting lineup, improved to 23-7-2 all time in season openers and a stellar 21-8-2 record in home openers.

CC has won all 13 encounters with the Bears at Stewart Field by a combined score of 40-2 and leads the all-time series 15-1-1.

The 2015 Colorado Cup continues on Sunday when Colorado College travels to Boulder on to face the University of Colorado at 3:30 p.m.
