Tigers Announce 2017-18 Captains

Junior forwards Tanner Ockey and Mason Bergh will serve as co-captains of the Colorado College hockey team for the 2017-18 season, head coach Mike Haviland announced today. Junior defensemen Andrew Farny and Cole McCaskill will be the assistant captains.

"With no seniors on the team this upcoming season, it allowed us to take a good look at the leadership of our team," Haviland said. "These four really stood out last year and have exhibited the qualities on and off the ice we are looking for in our captains."

Ockey (Calgary, Alberta) is the only returning Tiger to appear in every game the last two seasons. He had one goal and eight assists last year and led the team with a 49.2 faceoff winning percentage. For his career, Ockey has 14 points (3g,11a) in 72 games.

"Tanner's work ethic and passion every day is something that is contagious and vital to our culture," Haviland said. "He gives 150 percent on the ice, in the classroom and in the gym; he truly leads by example."

Bergh (Eden Prairie, MN) was one of seven Tigers to appear in all 36 games last season and is the team's top returning scorer after posting a career-high 24 points (14g,10a) in 2016-17. He is the team's active scoring leader with 37 points (18g,19a).

"Mason emerged as one the leaders on the ice and in the locker room during the 2016-17 season," Haviland said. "His passion and compete level are two great leadership qualities that will help us in the future as we continue to build our culture."

Farny (Steamboat Springs, CO) will wear an "A" for the second consecutive season after appearing in all 36 games last year. He did not score a goal but finished the season with three assists and 31 shots. Farny had three goals and nine assists as a freshman in '15-16.

"Andrew wore a letter last year and did a nice job," Haviland said. "He is a warrior and a quiet leader, another guy that leads by example. In everything we do, he does it hard and does it right."

McCaskill (Kamloops, B.C.) scored two goals and added six assists in 30 games last season for the Tigers. He finished second among the team's defensemen with eight points in '16-17 and has 16 points (5g,11a) in 60 career games.

"Cole's passion in all the different roles he was put into last season was very evident," Haviland said. "That passion and his compete level thrusted him into one of the leadership positions on the team."

Colorado College opens the 2017-18 season on Saturday, Sept. 30, with an exhibition game against the University of Lethbridge in Breckenridge, Colo., beginning at 5 p.m. The regular season begins on Friday, Oct. 6, with a two-game series against the University of Vermont in Burlington.
