It wasn't a work of art, by any means, but Colorado College got the job done on Sunday.
Sophomore forward
Tiffany Brown struck for her ninth goal and third game winner of the season just 6:18 into the match, fueling the Tigers to a 1-0 victory over the University of Houston in another key Conference USA match-up at Stewart Field.
The Tigers improved to 12-5-2 overall and 6-3-1 in C-USA play, remaining in the thick of league leaders with one regular-season game left to play.
Scrappy Houston, which recorded a 3-2 overtime triumph over UTEP in El Paso on Friday, dropped to 6-10-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the conference. CC travels to meet those same Miners next Friday night.
“We're very pleased with getting the three points today,” said head coach
Geoff Bennett, whose team pulled within three of first place after C-USA co-leaders East Carolina and Memphis played to a 3-3 tie. “This was a tough weekend for every team in the conference, playing one game at home and one away.
“We ran into a hard-working Houston team that had a great result on Friday, and we're very happy to get the three points. Now we need to regroup and refocus and get ready for UTEP.”
Senior keeper
Geneva Sills, playing the final home game of her collegiate career, backstopped Sunday's victory with five saves as Colorado College bounced back strong from Friday's 2-1 loss at Rice. The shutout was Sills' third this fall and her 22nd overall as a Tiger.
Brown capitalized on an early turnover by the Cougars, pouncing on a loose ball outside the box and rifling a shot from 25 yards out that beat UH keeper Shelby Scott low to her right. Scott finished with eight saves in the loss. CC came close to scoring twice in the second half, as
Kelsey Wise hit the cross bar with a header off a corner kick and
Meredith Smith saw one of her five shots graze the right post.
