Markel, Fazio lead Tigers against Wheaton

Carrie Markel won a pair freestyle events and Nicole Fazio met the NCAA qualifying standard in the 1-meter diving to lead CC against Wheaton College on Thursday night.

Overall, the Tigers won six of 16 events and posted six season bests, not counting events competed for the first this season, but Wheaton's depth proved too much to overcome as CC came out on the short end of a 174-113 decision.

In just the fourth meet of the season, Fazio met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 259.87 points on the 1-meter board and finished 23.93 points ahead of Wheaton's Julia Wright. Fazio also finished second in the 3-meter diving with 217.57 points.

“Nicole improved on every dive today from last meet, and her consistency led her to making the NCAA score,” head coach Anne Goodman James said.

Markel set a pair season bests wile winning the 200 (2:03.32) and 500 free (5:34.38), and swam the anchor leg on winning 400 free relay to pace the Tigers.

Mindy Stichfield won the 50 free by .13 seconds with a time of 26.53 and swam leadoff on CC's winning effort in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:54.20.

“Carrie continued to dominate in the middle distance freestyles, going her season best time in the 200 free,” said Goodman James. “Her consistency is so impressive. Mindy is just now building into the season, and is putting in some impressive performances.”

In the 200 IM, Julia Rubinstein led CC to a 1-2 finish by touching the wall in a season-best time of 2:28.90, 5.17 seconds ahead of Leore Geller.

Colorado College is back in the pool on Friday afternoon when they swim against Tufts University in Medford, Mass.
