Modern wins twice as Tigers top Mesa State

Thomas Modern won a pair of matches to help the men's tennis team come from behind to defeat Mesa State College, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at CC's Burghardt Tennis Courts.

The Tigers won for the second time in three matches and improved to 3-8 on the season. CC also avenged a 5-4 loss to the Mavericks on Feb. 28.

Modern teamed with Kenny Reid to post a convincing 8-1 victory over Kevin Nydam and Willie Keller, then rallied to defeat Niko Carrizo 6-7(7-3), 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles in what proved to be the deciding match.

Nate Burt also posted a three-set victory, avenging a loss to Rashad Khamis earlier in the season with a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 triumph.

Evan Jonker and Sam Barnard posted straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

“Overall, I thought we approached the match well, taking what we had learned last time into consideration and playing more confident all around,” head coach Naren Clark said. “It feels good to be on the winning side of a 5-4 result.”

Colorado College plays host to Montana State University-Billings at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Garden of the Gods Club.
