Colorado College began it's first-ever appearance at the Rhodes Invitational in impressive fashion with a 9-0 victory over Austin College on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers extended their winning streak to a season-long three matches, won for the fourth time in the last five matches and squared their overall record at 8-8.
Playing singles first, it didn't take long for CC to take command. Will Lindsay extended his personal winning streak to five matches with the first 6-0, 6-0 victory of his career at No. 5 singles, and Lionel Zen-Ruffinen prevailed for the third straight contest with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Zach White posted his third consecutive win by a 6-3, 6-1 count at No. 6 singles, and Thomas Modern won for the third time in his last five matches at No. 4 singles, claiming a 6-4, 6-1 decision.
The Tigers completed their third singles sweep of the season when Nate Burt and Evan Jonker posted straight-set victories at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Burt's 7-5, 6-1 triumph clinched the team victory, while Jonker won for the fourth time in his last five matches and ran his individual record to 8-6 with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Colorado College dominated the doubles matches by winning all three contests by an 8-1 count to complete its third sweep of the season.
Burt and Zen-Ruffinen improved to 8-7 by winning for the fourth time in the last five matches, and the team of Lindsay and White evened its record at 5-5 with its third consecutive victory.
“We started the match with singles and looked a little sluggish,” head coach Naren Clark said. “Perhaps it was the 85-degree weather and humidity, but it took about half a set for most of the guys to find their stride. It was a good start to the trip.”
Colorado College faces Hendrix College at 8 a.m. and Oglethorpe University at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
