Box Score Colorado College maintained its share of first place in Conference USA with a 1-0 victory over the University of Houston on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Sophomore forward
Lauren DiGregorio scored the only goal of a contest for the second time this season when she buried the rebound of a
Kaeli Vandersluis shot that ricocheted off the right post two minutes into the second half.
“It was a wide-open net,” DiGregorio said of the third game-winning goal of her career. “Jess (Ayers) did it for me when I hit the post (against Southern Miss) and she put it in, and I did it for Kaeli when she hit the post and I put it in. It's not any individual that makes the team.”
The Tigers improved to 7-4-3 overall and 5-0-1 in C-USA. CC also extended its current unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2) and improved to 7-0-1 this season when scoring the first goal of a game.
For the fourth Sunday in a row, it was DiGregorio who figured prominently in the game's key goal. In addition to today's game-winning tally, she set up
Brittney Lyman's game-winning goal against Arkansas on Sept. 18, scored the game winner against Marshall on Sept. 25, and tied the game late in the second half against No. 25 UCF on Oct. 2.
“Conference games are tough this time of year because everyone is playing on Friday and Sunday,” head coach
Geoff Bennett said. “Sunday games are very difficult to begin with and it comes down to fitness. Digger is very fit this year and is able to give us a good game on Friday and come out on Sunday and be very explosive. She was more explosive today, actually, than she was on Friday.”
The Colorado College defense did its part as well, posting its seven shutout of the season, its fifth in C-USA and its fourth on Sunday.
Hanna Berglund stopped all three shots that the Cougars put on goal while lowering her season goal-against average to 1.16 and raising her saves percentage to .779. In conference play, Berglund owns a 0.16 GAA and .964 saves percentage.
Her best save occurred in the 63rd minute when she made a diving stop at the left post on a blast by Houston's Jasmine Martinez from the top of the box.
The Tigers now have four 1-0 victories this season, including three in conference play. They have allowed just one goal against C-USA opponents in six games.
Colorado College finished with decisive advantages of 25-8 in total shots and 17-4 in corner kicks.
“Today we generated a lot of chances,” Bennett said. “We should have more than one goal to show for that. We had a goal called back today and we hit another post. We're creating good chances. We just have to get back to finishing a couple more each game to relieve some pressure on our goalkeeper and back line.”
Cami Koski made a pair of saves for the Cougars during the first half, while Sydney George stopped seven of eight shots in the second half.
CC's six-game C-USA unbeaten streak is its longest since joining the conference as an affiliate member in 2006, and the eight-game overall unbeaten streak is its longest since that season.
Colorado College goes back on the road next weekend when it travels to UAB for its second night game of the season and a showdown with the University of Memphis on Sunday.
