Box Score Sophomore forward
Jaclyn Silsby scored the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute and senior forward
Brittney Lyman added an insurance tally almost 10 minutes later to give Colorado College a 3-1 victory at the University of Houston on Friday night.
The Tigers, who improved to 11-3-4 overall, maintained their one-point lead over UCF in the battle for second place in the Conference USA standings. With a 6-2-1 league record, CC is just three points behind first-place Rice heading into Sunday's showdown with the Owls.
“We're very pleased with tonight's performance” head coach
Geoff Bennett said. “I was extremely happy with how we played during the first half. We controlled the play and were very technical.”
Sophomore midfielder
Rachel Herron's first career goal gave Colorado College a 1-0 lead with 1:34 remaining in the first half, but the Cougars tied the game in the 62nd minute when Kelsey Zamora scored from five yards out off a cross from Katelyn Rhodes.
Not only did Zamora's goal get the Robertson Stadium crowd back in the game, it also lit a fire under the Tigers.
A little more than eight minutes after UH scored, Silsby struck for her first career game winner after taking a feed from senior midfielder
Hannah Peterson.
Lyman put the game on ice in the 80th minute with her fourth goal of the season, and in the process continued her climb in the CC record books. She moved into a tie for seventh with Ann Cerinicek (1984-87) with 23 career goals and moved up to ninth with 58 points.
“Credit to Houston,” Bennett said. “They came out in the second half and pushed the tempo, and got a nice goal to tie the game. We were super proud of how our players reacted. They kicked it into another gear and scored two great goals.”
The Tigers have struck for 21 of their 33 tallies after halftime this season. CC scored game winners against Tulsa in the 61st minute, Denver in the 62nd, Houston in the 70th minute, Marshall in the 80th and UAB in the 81st.
Colorado College also improved to 7-1-1 in games played on Fridays.
The Tigers outshot Houston 9-2 in the first half and finished with a 12-5 advantage.
Senior Hannah Berglund had to make only one save while improving to 7-1-0 in goal.
“We're excited and now we'll focus on Sunday because we play an unbelievably talented Rice team,” Bennett said. “We'll give it everything we can.”
