Missed chances haunt Tigers at East Carolina

Box Score Colorado College wasn't disappointed with the way it played on Sunday at East Carolina University, but it was certainly was not pleased with the result.

Missed opportunities during the first half led to a 1-0 loss to the Pirates in a Conference USA game at the ECU Soccer Stadium.

“We didn't cash in on the chances we created, including a handful of really good ones when we had players alone with the goalkeeper,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “In conference play, especially on the road, it comes down to finishing your chances. We didn't do that today.”

The Tigers recorded an 8-3 advantage in total shots in the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to get the ball past junior goalkeeper Christiane Cordero who made three of her six saves.

After surviving the first half, the Pirates struck for the only goal of the contest in the 47th minute.

Freshman forward Kendall Frey scored off a cross from senior forward Chrissy Gratz and the ECU defense held the Tigers to only four shots during the final 43 minutes.

Senior Hannah Berglund stopped three shots during her 75:41 in goal. Freshman Kate Scheele made one save in relief.

Each team launched 12 total shots, while Colorado College enjoyed a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

“We're not disappointed with the way we played,” Bennett said. “In fact, we played very well especially during the first half. Credit to ECU. They took advantage of a set piece, which was something we were worried about.”

The Tigers, who slipped to 6-2-3 overall and 1-1-0, saw their five-game winning streak snapped. East Carolina improved to 6-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play.

Colorado College is on the road again next week when it travels to the University of Tulsa and SMU on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively.
