Will Lindsay and his Colorado College teammates had a plan, stuck to it and reaped the dividends on Saturday despite a bit of a chilly start under overcast skies.
"We wanted to frustrate them," Lindsay said after his 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles helped the Tigers cruise to a convincing 7-2 home-court triumph over Southwestern University. "They're not used to playing at this altitude, so we knew the key would be keeping the ball in play and avoiding unforced errors. The ball moves a little faster here, and I think we were able to use that to our advantage.”
Senior Lindsay and junior
Oliver Gunter overcame a 5-1 deficit in their earlier No. 1 doubles match, prevailing 9-7 to give CC a 2-0 advantage after
Zach White and
Jack Burger combined for an 8-2 whipping of Andy Clarage and Omeed Azmoudeh at No. 2. LIndsay also made a less dramatic comeback in his singles competition against SWU freshman Egan Cornachione, rallying from love-40 down in the fifth game of the first set to break and go up 4-2.
"That probably was the turning point," said Lindsay. "“In the second set it was just a matter of taking care of business, just playing steady. I didn't think he (Cornachione) would have much left.
"We didn't start out so great. You can't hit the ball too hard in the cold weather, but it was good to keep fighting and come back.”
White, Burger and freshman
Casey Shaw also added singles victories as the Tigers won for the third time in their last four matches to improve to 5-6 for the season. It was the team's only Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season match of the campaign, and the first-ever SCAC competition at home for Lindsay during his four years with the program.
White was down 5-1 in the first set before coming back to win 7-6 in a 4-point tiebreaker then finishing off Alex Bergeson 6-3 in the second. Shaw made short work of Azmoudeh at No. 6 singles – 6-1, 6-0 – after a battling to a 9-8 (7-1) victory at No. 3 doubles with
Robert Kasemodel.
CC plays its final home match of the season on Sunday, taking on NCAA Division II opponent Hastings College at 10 a.m. MT.
