Box Score Sarah Schweiss and
Jessie Ayers teamed up for the only goal Colorado College needed in the 58th minute to help the Tigers post a 2-0 victory over visiting UNLV on a picture-perfect Friday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Schweiss put a laser between the crossbar and the fingertips of freshman goalkeeper Jordan Sallee from 16 yards out on the right side after taking a perfect feed Ayers.
"That one felt good," the junior midfielder said. "It was a great lead through by Jessie and I hit it as hard as I could and put it on frame. That's exactly what we needed."
With her seventh goal of the season, Schweiss moved into a tie for the league lead with three game winners. Ayers became the 30th player in program history to record 10 or more career assists.
The Rebels nearly leveled the score in the 76th minute, but Isabelle Delgado's header off a cross from Kaila Brinkman sailed just over the crossbar.
Freshman goalkeeper Rowan Fredericksen recorded five saves en route to her fourth clean sheet of the season.
"Today we were all on the same page and that really helped out," Fredericksen said. "Everyone communicated and worked together. It was another step as we build confidence for the end of the year and the conference tournament."
Sallee, who finished with five saves, kept UNLV within striking distance by making point-blank stops on Ayers and senior midfielder
Kaeli Vandersluis, but the Tigers put the game away with an insurance tally with 9:56 remaining.
Freshman defender
Anne-Sophie Lapointe took the ball from Brinkman near the right sideline and dribbled toward the center of the field. Just before Lapointe reached the top of the box, she slipped a pass to freshman midfielder
Maddi Dunn, who beat Sallee with a low shot inside the left post.
"I tried to beat the player next to me and then I saw Maddi running," Lapointe said. "I slipped her the ball and she scored. It feels good to get my first point."
UNLV finished with a 17-16 edge in total shots, while the Tigers had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Colorado College, which extended its home unbeaten streak to 21 matches, improved to 8-4-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Mountain West.
The Rebels slipped to 7-7-1 overall and 2-5-0 in league play.
Colorado College plays host to the University of Nevada on Sunday at noon.
