CC Grounds Air Force In Final Home Game

Box Score It was memorable Friday afternoon for Jessie Ayers and the seven Colorado College seniors who played their final game at Stewart Field.

Ayers struck for what proved to be her 10th career game winner in the 30th minute to help the Tigers record a 2-0 victory over Air Force.

Not only did CC improve to 11-5-3 overall and 7-3-1 in the Mountain West, the Tigers extended their home unbeaten streak to 23 games (20-0-3).

With the 29th tally of her career, Ayers climbed into a tied for fifth place on Colorado College's all-time list with Tiffany Brown (2007-10) and Cissy Wafford (1988-91). The senior midfielder also tied Rebecca Carroll (1999-2002) for sixth place with 68 career points.

The senior midfielder scored off precision passes from junior midfielder Sarah Schweiss and senior forward Rachel Herron.

"I am really proud of how we played today," Ayers said. "We really took a step forward as a team by playing a full 90 minutes. We really needed that going into the playoffs because now we know we can do it."

Schweiss scored a goal of her own in the 59th minute when she converted on a penalty kick with a shot into the upper right corner.

With a goal and an assist, Schweiss equaled her point total from a year ago and now is tied for 25th place on the career list with 42. All three of her assists this season have been on game-winning goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Rowan Fredericksen didn't face a shot on goal until there was just 5:44 remaining in the game, but she had to make a diving save on a shot by Kristina O'Sullivan in the 88th minute to preserve her sixth clean sheet of the season.

The Tigers finished with a 26-6 advantage in total shots, which included a 9-2 margin in those on target.

First-year goalkeeper Meghan Strang stopped six shots during the second half, including a diving stop on a penalty kick by CC's Kaeli Vandersluis in the 56th minute

Freshman Alex Kahalley made a pair of saves in the first half for the Falcons, who ended the season with a 7-10-1 overall record.

Because the University of Wyoming clinched second place with a 4-1 victory over Colorado State, Colorado College will play Tuesday in the opening round of the Mountain West Championship at San Diego State University.

The opponent and time will be determined at the conclusion of Friday night's New Mexico-SDSU game.
