Box Score Colorado College earned its first Mountain West victory and extended its home winning streak to 20 games with a 3-1 victory over Boise State University on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Freshman midfielder
Maddi Dunn struck for her first game winner in the 59th minute, taking a pass from junior midfielder
Sarah Schweiss and bending a shot into the upper right corner just past the fingertips of BSU freshman goalkeeper Janelle Flores.
"It was a really great pass from
Sarah Schweiss," Dunn said. "It was a perfectly weighted ball to my right foot and I just struck it. I thought it was going to hit the post, but it curved a little. I've been due for a goal.
"It was looking a lot like the Utah State game, so I was glad we could pull it out. Our coaches told us to relax and possess the ball."
Senior midfielder
Jessie Ayers tacked on an insurance goal with a little more than 20 minutes to play, drilling a crossing shot off of a Bronco defender into the top right corner.
"I thought today was great," head coach
Geoff Bennett said. "We changed our system, we tweaked our warmup a bit, we tried to get a different mentality and I think it showed.
"We played looser and I thought we attacked really well in the second half. That's a big three points against a really good Boise State team. We wanted six points out of the weekend and we got four. It's always nice to get the first conference win under the belt."
Senior forward
Rachel Herron put the Tigers on the board when she tapped a long pass from junior defender
Alexis Long around Flores and rolled the ball into an open net.
Less than two minutes later, senior midfielder Shannon Schueren leveled the score after beating CC goalkeeper
Rowan Frederiksen to a through ball.
Colorado College finished with a 16-8 advantage in total shots, while Boise State recorded a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Frederiksen made a pair of saves for the Tigers, denying a drive by Kelli Drobney in the 63rd minute and stopping senior defender Mikhaila Bowden with 9:45 to play.
Flores finished with five saves, including a lunging stop on a rising shot from sophomore forward
Chanisse Hendrix with 2:11 remaining in the first half.
Colorado College kicks off a four-game road stretch next Friday when the Tigers visit defending Mountain West champion San Diego State at 7 p.m. PT.
"We have the conference favorites on Friday night out in San Diego," Bennett said. "There's no pressure on us. We'll go to San Diego State and see if we can steal some points from them."
