Schweiss Lifts Tigers Into MW Championship

Box Score Sarah Schweiss has scored a lot of big goals during her three seasons at Colorado College, but none were as important as the one she scored Friday night at the Cadet Soccer Stadium.

Schweiss struck for the game-winner with 48 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over Air Force and into next week's Mountain West Championship in San Diego as the fifth seed.

The senior midfielder, who battled food poisoning throughout the game, lofted a shot from 20 yards into the upper right corner after taking a touch from first-year midfielder Clara Richter

"I couldn't draw it up any better," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "Sarah is the player of the year and the offensive player of the year. If the other coaches don't see that, they're crazy. She puts the team on her back and gets it done."

Playing in front of her family and friends, many of whom have ties to the Academy, Schweiss scored her 10th goal of the year as well as her 11th career game winner.

"We knew we had to win to keep going," Schweiss said. "It's also a hometown rival, so it was really important that we won tonight."

Senior midfielder Alex Long opened the scoring in the 17th minute when she knocked home the rebound of a shot by Samantha Curran after Air Force sophomore keeper Alex Kahalley made a diving stop off the ball that glanced off an AFA defender.

Freshman midfielder Lauren Milliet doubled CC's lead late in the 27th minute when she found the upper right corner with a shot from 15 yards away.

The Falcons fought back after halftime, cutting their deficit in half just 4:25 into the second frame when junior defender Kristina O'Sullivan put a direct free kick from 25 yards out high inside the left post.

They tied the game 12:30 later on a diving header in the center of the box by sophomore midfielder Angela Karamanos off a cross from the right corner from Brooke Rittman.

Sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie made six saves for the Tigers, who improved to 8-11-1 overall and 6-5-0 in the conference.

Kahalley stopped seven shots before exiting the game with 7:57 remaining in regulation after colliding with Richter.

Hiddink, who finished with one save, made a diving stop on a crossing shot by Milliet with 1:16 to go.

Air Force completed its season with an overall mark of 4-14-1, which included a 2-8-1 record in the Mountain West.

Colorado College faces the University of Wyoming on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at San Diego State University at 7 p.m. PT.
