Tigers Blank Wyoming In MW Quarterfinal

Box Score The victory was worth the wait for Colorado College.

The Tigers utilized a Clara Richter goal and a brilliant defensive effort to record a 1-0 victory over the University of Wyoming after the Mountain West quarterfinal match was delayed 15 hours because of lightning on Tuesday night.

CC is through to play top-seed and host San Diego State University on Thursday night at 7 p.m. PT.

Richter struck in the 16th minute, slotting a shot into the right side of the net from 14 yards out after taking a touch from MW Offensive Player of the Year Sarah Schweiss.

The freshman midfielder made a run through the center of the field and received a perfect pass from Schweiss after a pair of defenders converged on Colorado College's senior midfielder.

"I got a perfect ball from Sarah Schweiss," Richter said. "I just hit it on a first touch and it went in. It was great."

Richter extended her point streak to three games with her first career game-winning tally.

With the assist, Schweiss continued her climb in the program's record book. She now is tied for seventh place with 68 points and tied for 13th with 14 assists.

Schweiss has factored in eight of the team's nine game-winning goals this season, scoring six and setting up two others.

The Tigers nearly extended their lead to 2-0 with 9:40 remaining in the first half, but Wyoming goalkeeper Cassidy Entsminger came off her line to block a shot with her legs after Richter found herself alone in the middle of the box.

The CC defense allowed just five total shots while recording its fifth clean sheet of the season.

"Our players followed the tactical plan brilliantly," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "They get all the credit. At halftime, we said bend, don't break, and do the little things right."

Louisa Mackenzie made her first save early in the 40th minute when she smothered a shot by junior forward Shaina Ashouri, the Cowgirls' leading scorer.

Wyoming also had a dangerous opportunity with 16:47 to play in the second half when the ball was played into the penalty area, but Mackenzie grabbed the ball before the Cowgirls could gain possession.

In a pair of one-goal victories over Wyoming this season, the only goal conceded by the Colorado College defense was on a penalty kick.

The Tigers continued their dominance over the Cowgirls, prevailing for the ninth time in 10 meetings.

CC improved to 9-11-1 and will face the Aztecs in the semifinal round of the conference tournament for the second year in a row.

"San Diego State has all the pressure," Bennett said. "They're at home and they're the No. 1 seed. We're playing with house money. We'll let the dice roll and see what happens."

Wyoming finished its season with a 10-6-4 record.
