The Colorado College men's tennis team concluded its 2014-15 season Saturday by winning the fifth-place match at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships with a 5-1 victory over Austin College Saturday in Georgetown, Texas. With the win, CC snapped a nine-match losing streak and finished the campaign with a 4-15 record.
The Tigers started out on a high note, capturing two of the three doubles matches for a 2-1 advantage. CC's No. 1 team of senior
Jack Burger and sophomore
Jason Gutierrez downed Cedric Ambulo and Eric Meendsen, 8-5, while the No. 3 duo of junior
Ross Sherman and sophomore
Jack Benham won their second match in as many days with an 8-4 victory over Jeffrey Kubena and Zach Bomar. Junior
Taylor Delehanty and freshman
Jake Peterson nearly made it a clean sweep for CC but eventually lost to David Smith and Daniel Oxenreiter, 9-8(7).
CC wrapped up the match by winning the first three singles contests off the court, all in straight sets. Gutierrez finished the season with a four-match winning streak by defeating Ambulo, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. Delehanty cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Oxenreiter and junior
Casey Shaw clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 5 spot over Smith.
"We started slow in doubles but fought our way to a 2-1 lead," CC head coach
Anthony Weber said. "Casey put together one of his best performances of the year to seal the win. It was a great way to finish off the year and I'm really proud of the guys."
