CC Blanks Schreiner, Climbs to Second in SCAC

Box Score Colorado College utilized a dominating second-half performance to record a 2-0 victory over Schreiner University on Friday afternoon at Washburn Field.

With the win, CC improved to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and climbed into second place in the league standings

The Tigers trail Trinity University by just two points and have an opportunity to leap into first when the rivals meet this Sunday at noon at Stewart Field.

Playing with the wind in the second half, it did not take long for Colorado College to seize control of the momentum.

A goal kick by the Mountaineers knocked down by the wind and dropped near the top of the penalty area within range of Cam Stopforth. The senior forward took a touch and sent a through ball to senior midfielder Joel Frykholm, who curled a shot from the right side of the box inside the far post.

It was the second time in the last five games CC's leading scorers combined for a game-winning goal.

Senior goalkeeper Theo Hooker made his only save of the game in the 86th minute on a shot by Schreiner junior forward Eddie Martinez.

Hooker diffused a potentially explosive situation in the 82nd minute when he raced off his line to keep sophomore forward Antonio Cortes from getting to a long crossing pass from Martinez that got behind the Tiger defense.

Almost a minute later, Colorado College added an insurance goal when senior forward Sam Markin scored on his second try at a penalty kick.

The situation began when sophomore defender Henry Suazo used his hand to keep Markin's shot from the center of the box out of the goal and was sent off with a straight red card.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Anselmi stopped Markin's penalty kick, but CC was given a second opportunity because freshman defender Zach Rodriguez was three yards past Markin when the initial shot was taken.

The Tigers defense allowed just one shot in the second half while completing their seventh shutout of the season and the sixth for Hooker.

Colorado College finished with a 20-5 advantage in total shots and a 13-5 edge in corner kicks.
