Southwestern Upsets Tigers in SCAC Tourney

Box Score Junior forward Alex Newell scored the only goal of the game and senior goalkeeper Ryan Benner stopped all eight shots Colorado College put on frame as Southwestern University held on for a 1-0 victory in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer championship on Friday afternoon.

The sixth-seeded Pirates, who improved to 6-11-3 overall, earned a date against tournament host University of Dallas on Saturday afternoon in the second semifinal match.

Newell scored on a header from near the right post off of a cross from senior midfielder Christian Lopez a little less than 25 minutes into the game.

That was the only ball that eluded CC senior goalkeeper Theo Hooker, who finished with five saves.

The Tigers dominated the run of play in the second half, but a 14-1 advantage in total shots was all they had to show for it.

Colorado College came within inches of breaking through in the 21st minute, but senior forward Tim Huettel's shot from the right side of the box went just wide of the back post.

Southwestern survived a dangerous situation in the 89th minute when a throw in from senior forward Cam Stopforth found its way past Benner and was loose in the box, but the Pirate defense cleared the ball off the line before any CC players could get to it.

The Tigers had one last possession during the final minute, but junior defender Keenan Amer's shot from the left edge of the box sailed over the crossbar.

For the game, Colorado College produced a 25-9 margin in total shots as well as an 8-6 edge on shots on target. SU finished with a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Southwestern snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Tigers. The last time the Pirates defeated CC was in a semifinal match of the 2013 conference tournament by a 2-1 score.

Colorado College finished the season with a 11-4-5 record.
