Tigers Rally to Sneak Past Hastings

The Colorado College men's tennis team earned a wild 5-4 over Hastings College Sunday at Lifetime Fitness in Colorado Springs.

"We always have a great match with Hastings and today was no different," head coach Anthony Weber said.

The Broncos jumped out to a 2-1 lead by winning at the top two doubles spots. Colorado College took the No. 3 match as seniors Jason Gutierrez and Jack Benham defeated Razvan Dobrin and Tim Fischer, 6-4.

In singles play, four of the six matches went to a third-set super-tiebreak, with the Tigers capturing three of them to complete the comeback.

CC freshman Noah Forman won at the No. 1 spot for the second straight day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mark Gueswell. Hastings regained a 3-2 lead after Zach Inman downed Gutierrez, 6-3, 7-6(3), at the No. 2 position.

Then things really got interesting.

Freshmen Logan Pepperl and Kevin Berry each rallied from a one-set deficit to win his match and give the Tigers a 4-3 advantage. Pepperl came from behind to beat Fischer, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(9), at No. 4, while Barry did him one point better in defeating Dobrin, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(10) at the No. 5 spot.

Benham won the first set against Tanner Sandvick, but ended up on the losing end of a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) decision at No. 6, evening the team match at 4-4 with the No. 3 match still going.

Tiger sophomore Daniel Holland won the first set, 6-3, against Dakota Burns but dropped the second set by the same score. Holland came through in the tiebreak, 10-8, to win the match for the Tigers.

"We fought back really well today after falling into a hole in doubles and some slow starts in singles," Weber said. "We never gave up and Danny fought hard to clinch it for us."

The Tigers (5-8) return to action on Saturday, April 8 against Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., beginning at 10 a.m.
