Stopforth Strikes Twice as CC Tops Schreiner

Box Score Senior forward Cam Stopforth struck for a pair of first-half goals to lead Colorado College to a 3-1 victory at Schreiner University on a hot and humid Friday afternoon.

Stopforth opened the scoring late in the sixth minute when he finished off of a touch from junior forward Robert Malone. Malone broke behind the Mountaineer's back four, dribbled along the end line and cut the ball back to Stopforth, who first-timed a shot inside the right post from six yards.

A little more than 20 minutes later, Stopforth struck for what proved to be the first game winner of his career when he scored from the penalty spot with a shot to the lower left corner.

Stopforth's brace was the second of his career. His first multiple-goal contest was during last year's 4-0 victory over Southwestern University at Stewart Field.

Freshman midfielder Miles Montgomery scored his first collegiate goal in the 40th minute, converting off  a pass from senior midfielder Joel Frykholm to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Frykholm drove at the Schreiner defense in the center of the field before laying the ball off to Montgomery, who took a touch and buried a crossing shot inside the left post from 18 yards.

"We certainly didn't play our best today, but we couldn't have asked for a better start," head coach Scott Palguta said. "The guys jumped on top of Schreiner and did well to finish their early chances."

The Mountaineers finished with a 9-7 advantage in total shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Schreiner broke up the shutout 1:08 into the second half on a score by Daniel Banda, but that proved to be the only goal the CC defense would surrender.

Senior goalkeeper Theo Hooker made four of his five saves during the first half when the Tigers scored on three of their first four shots.

"We dealt with the difficult conditions admirably and closed out the game maturely during the last 15 minutes," Palguta added.

Colorado College improved to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Junior keeper Brandon Anselmi stopped one shot for Schreiner, which dropped to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.

CC returns to action at No. 4 Trinity University on Sunday at noon CT.
