Colorado College dropped a 2-1 result at the University of New Mexico on Sunday afternoon and now needs a win and some help on the final day of the regular season in order to earn a spot in the 2018 Mountain West Championship.
CC (8-6-2 / 4-4-2) slipped into a tie with UNLV for seventh place in the conference table with 14 points, and now must defeat cross-town rival Air Force and hope either San Jose State University beats Fresno State or the Lobos tie or defeat San Diego State University in their final games of the regular season.
Fresno State currently is fifth with 17 points, but the Tigers hold the tie-breaker thanks to a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Sept. 23. At the moment, SDSU is sixth with 15 points.
Everything was going according to the plan when CC broke through in the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman forward
Jacqui Hand collected a long pass from sophomore defender
Tayla Wheeler, dribbled past a UNM defender and beat goalkeeper Emily Johnson with a shot from the left side.
With her third goal of the season, Hand climbed into a tie with Wheeler for second place on the team with three goals as well as a tie for third with seven points.
New Mexico's Mackenna Havenor leveled the score midway through the second half when she scored from 25 yards out in the center of the field.
Colorado College nearly regained the lead in the 62nd minute, but a shot off the foot of junior forward
Catie McDonald from the center of the box sailed just wide of the right post.
Almost 12 minutes later, Johnson made a diving save at the right post on a blast from junior midfielder
Lucia Costanza.
The score remained tied until the 87th minute when Jill Olguin scored with a crossing shot from the right of the box after a hard rebound of a shot by Jenna Killman went directly to her.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jade Odom finished with seven saves for CC.
She made a punch save on Jessie Hix's point-blank header in the 21st minute, and smothered a crossing drive by Alesia Garcia at the right post in the 55th minute.
Johnson made stopped four shots for the Lobos, who improved to 10-5-2 overall and 6-2-2 in the conference.
New Mexico finished with a 22-12 advantage in total shots, including a 10-5 edge in those on target.
UNM also won six corner kicks, while the Tigers had two.
Colorado College plays host to Air Force on Friday, Oct. 26, in the regular season finale at Stewart Field. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. MT.
