UAA Rallies to Edge Tigers

Alaska Anchorage scored twice in the third period Sunday night to post a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Colorado College at Sullivan Arena.

Trailing 3-2 entering the final period, Nils Rygaard scored at the 7:38 mark to even the score, then Tomi Hiekkavirta notched the game-winner from the point with 9:18 remaining to gain a split of the weekend series after dropping a 10-2 decision to the Tigers on Saturday.

Alex Berardinelli scored the Tigers' first goal of the game for the second consecutive night, giving CC a 1-0 lead at the 7:51 mark of the opening period. Cam Amantea evened the score with a shorthanded goal at the 16:21 mark of the first.

The Seawolves took a 2-1 lead at the 6:32 mark of the second when Joe Sofo poked in a rebound past Tiger goalie Alec Calvaruso, who made his third career start.

The Tigers did something later in the second period that was a struggle for them to do last season, take advantage of a five-minute power play. After UAA's Carmine Buono was called for a major penalty for knocking Christiano Versich into the boards from behind at the 12:14 mark, Nick Halloran and Chris Wilkie scored to give the Tigers a one-goal lead.

Halloran scored just 15 seconds into the man advantage by deflecting a shot by Wilkie past UAA netminder Brody Claeys, then Wilkie roofed a shot past Claeys at 15:05 to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage.

The Tigers outshot UAA, 32-23, including a 23-10 advantage in the final 40 minutes. Claeys finished the game with 29 saves, while Calvaruso had 19 for CC.

"Give them (Alaska Anchorage) credit, they came out a played hard," head coach Mike Haviland said. "You can't look at what you did the night before, you still have to come out and play for 60 minutes. We only gave up 10 shots in the final 40 minutes, but we have to take advantage when we do that."

The Tigers play their first home game of the season next Friday, Oct. 12, against Alabama Huntsville at the Broadmoor World Arena, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
