For the second consecutive game, Colorado College held a one-goal lead over No. 2 St. Cloud State after two periods, and for the second straight night, the Huskies rallied to defeat the Tigers.
Â
Jack Poehling scored at the 7:38 mark of the third period and Easton Brodzinski notched the game-winner on the power play with 2:10 remaining to give SCSU a 2-1 victory Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
The Tigers (4-3-1, 0-2-0 NCHC) had a power play of their own for the final 50 seconds after Sam Hentges was whistled for hooking. With goalie
Alex Leclerc pulled for an extra skater, SCSU goalie David Hrenak saved a shot by
Alex Berardinelli during a scrum in the crease, then stopped
Mason Bergh's attempt in the waning seconds.
Â
The entire game was very entertaining and very even on the scoresheet. Each team recorded 30 shots and one power-play goal.
Â
On the fifth of CC's seven power-play opportunities,
Westin Michaud scored his fourth goal of the season to give CC a 1-0 lead at the 11:28 mark of the second period.
Â
Michaud sent a backhander past Hrenak after a pass from
Nick Halloran was deflected by
Trey Bradley in front of the net and went to Michaud at the right side of the net. Bradley and Halloran each collected his fifth helper of the season, tying Bergh for the team lead.
Â
The Tigers entered the third period with the lead for the seventh time in eight games this season, but Poehling evened things up when he found a loose puck at the bottom of the right circle, turned and fired a shot just inside the near post.
Â
The Huskies (7-1-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) caught a break as Michaud was called for high-sticking with 3:34 remaining in the third period as he and SCSU's Jack Ahcan battled for the puck in the corner to the right of Hrenak. On the ensuing power play, Brodzinski took a pass from Jimmy Schuldt along the boards, skated to the slot and beat Leclerc on his glove side.
Â
Hrenak finished the game with 29 saves and Leclerc had 28. Bergh led all players with six shots, while Poehling and Robby Jackson led SCSU with four apiece.
Â
"I thought we battled and competed for every inch of the ice," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "That's what you have to do. When you battle and compete like this, then you have a chance to win, and if you don't, you won't."
Â
The Tigers don't have it any easier next weekend, as they travel to play the only team in the country ranked higher than the one they played this weekend, taking on top-ranked Minnesota Duluth at Amsoil Arena, Nov. 9-10.
