Westin Michaud,
Troy Conzo and
Trevor Gooch each recorded a goal and an assist Friday night to lead Colorado College to a 5-2 victory over Vermont in a non-conference game at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Despite controlling the play for most of the first period and outshooting Vermont, 14-7, the Tigers trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes. Â Matt Alvaro opened the scoring at the 11:34 mark after collecting the puck following a blocked shot and beating
Alex Leclerc with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.
Â
Conzo tied the game with his second goal of the year at the 3:45 mark. Gooch sent a through pass to
Christiano Versich at the Vermont blue line. Versich collected the pass, spun around and found Conzo, who cleanly beat Vermont goalie Stefanos Lekkas from the slot.
Â
The Tigers (7-6-2) took the lead for good when Michaud took a pass from Alex Pernistsky and found himself one-on-one with Lekkas. Michaud's wrister went just inside the left post from the slot to make it 2-1 with 4:22 remaining in the period.
Â
Trey Bradley knocked home his own rebound for an insurance goal 1:20 into the third period. After
Nick Halloran hit Bradley streaking down the slot, Lekkas stopped Bradley's first shot, but not his second and it was 3-1.
Â
It stayed that way until the final 1:26 of the game, when the teams combined for three goals. With Lekkas on the bench, Conor O'Neil scored to cut the lead to 3-2, but Gooch scored an empty-netter with 36 seconds remaining and
Grant Cruikshank notched his third of the season with 13 seconds to play.
Bryan Yoon collected an assist on Bradley's and Gooch's goals for a career-high two points.
Â
"I am really proud of the way we played tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "We were confident with the puck."
Â
Colorado College was 0-for-2 on the power play and was not called for a penalty for the first time since Dec. 14, 2013 at Wisconsin.
Â
Leclerc finished the game with 22 saves, including a couple of point-blank saves early in the second period and a tremendous glove save on a wraparound attempt by Alvaro with eight minutes remaining in the third period.
Â
"He (Leclerc) made some really big saves in the second period," Haviland said. "He has done that since he's been here."
Â
The Tigers outshot Vermont, 41-24, the fifth consecutive game CC held the shot advantage and the second-highest total this season (47 vs. Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 12). Lekkas had 36 saves for the Catamounts (4-8-1).
Â
The two teams battle again Saturday night, beginning at 6 p.m.
