Colorado College and Western Michigan closed out their weekend series by skating to a 4-4 tie Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
The Tigers led for the majority of the third period after taking a 4-3 lead late in the second period, but WMU's Ronnie Attard scored with an extra attacker on the ice with 23.9 seconds remaining in the third to send the game to overtime.
Â
WMU outshot the Tigers, 8-1, in the 5-on-5 overtime and CC killed a penalty towards the end of the frame, but neither team scored. After a scoreless 3-on-3 period, the Broncos gained the extra point in the NCHC standings as Ethan Frank and Josh Passolt both connected in the shootout, while
Grant Cruikshank scored and
Chris Wilkie missed for CC.
Â
Western Michigan (3-3-2, 1-0-1 NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 7:27 of the contest. Paul Washe opened the scoring at the 3:41 mark after Cole Gallant's shot was blocked by a Tiger defender but it went right to the front of the net and in off Washe's chest.
Â
The Broncos doubled the lead when Ronnie Attard sent a blast from the right circle past CC goalie
Matt Vernon, who finished the game with a career-high 43 saves.
Â
The Tigers (2-3-1, 0-1-1 NCHC) cut the lead in half at the 9:18 mark when
Connor Mayer took a pass from
Bryan Yoon and fired a rocket from the high slot that beat Bronco goalie Brandon Bussi for his first career goal.
Â
After WMU's Michael Joyaux was whistled for a five-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind, the Tigers capitalized on the power play as
Bailey Conger collected a rebound and put it past Bussi at the 15:37 mark of the opening frame to even the score at 2-2.
Â
The Broncos recaptured the lead just 1:42 into the second period as Drew Worrad scored his third of the weekend, but
Ben Copeland stole the puck at the WMU blue line, cruised down the right side and placed a shot inside the near post to make it 3-3 at the 3:41 mark.
Â
CC took the lead for the first time at 4-3 with 54 seconds left in the middle frame when Conger scored his second power-play goal of the game, taking a pass from
Alex Berardinelli and hitting the back of the net from the slot.
Â
What Head Coach Mike Haviland Said
"We were down 2-0 and getting very badly outplayed early on but we found a way to battle back and go ahead there.Â
"This is what you get in this conference. You have to understand you have to play right to the very end. They make a play 6 on 5 and they get a goal. We were down 2-0 and
battled back."Â
"It was a really good hockey game. We had to kill a penalty in overtime. It was a wild hockey game but I am happy with how we came back after (Friday) night, for sure."
