Troy Conzo scored twice and
Trey Bradley added a goal and and two assists as Colorado College upset No. 3-ranked Minnesota Duluth, 4-1, Friday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Alex Leclerc posted 40 saves for the Tigers (11-12-3, 5-7-2 NCHC), who collected their season-high third consecutive victory and snapped UMD's four-game winning streak.
Â
"We played a smart, direct, simple hockey game and you have to play that against them," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "Guys are understanding and buying in that we have to limit their chances. We have limited our mistakes in the past month and a half. It was nice to get rewarded because we are playing well and playing the right way."
Â
Bradley opened the scoring at the 4:26 mark of the first period. He collected the puck behind the net after a UMD turnover, skated out in front and placed a shot between UMD goalie Hunter Shepard's legs for his team-leading 11
th goal of the season.
Â
Shepard kept the Bulldogs (16-7-2, 9-5-1 NCHC) within reach by stopping breakaways from
Trevor Gooch and
Alex Berardinelli in the opening frame.
Â
Conzo put the Tigers up 2-0 at the 7:13 mark of the second after a shot by
Christiano Versich that Shepard stopped was collected by Conzo and he scored from the right circle.
Â
Peter Krieger cut the lead in half by deflecting a shot from Noah Cates right in front of Leclerc, but Conzo sent the lead back to two with 2:41 remaining in the middle frame.
Cole McCaskill's shot from the left point was blocked and the puck went to Bradley, who found Conzo at the bottom of the right circle and he went top shelf past Shepard for his sixth of the season.
Â
Conzo notched the second two-goal game of his career, the other was Feb. 9, 2018 at North Dakota, and has nine points (4g,5a) in his last eight games.
Â
"The first one was kind of a lucky bounce but the second one, Trey made a great pass to me and I just tried to get it to the back of the net," Conzo said. "The key for us was getting out to a good start, getting that first goal and playing with the lead. We were really good structure-wise tonight."
Â
Grant Cruikshank closed out the scoring at the 5:12 mark of the third period. Shepard stopped a shot by
Chris Wilkie but Cruikshank was all alone in the slot for the rebound.
Â
Bradley, who was on the ice for all of CC's goals and recorded a career-high +4 rating, has nine points (6g,3a) in his last seven games.
Â
"He (Bradley) has been outstanding," Haviland said. "Trey plays with that little edge. I love his game right now. Â He has been a major part why we have it going a little bit here."
Leclerc was sharp, especially during UMD's only power-play opportunity midway through the first period, stopping all four shots to keep the CC lead at 1-0.
Â
UMD outshot the Tigers, 41-28, including a 31-18 advantage in the last two periods, and Shepard finished with 24 saves.
Â
The two teams will square off on Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at 6 p.m.
