Basse's Efforts Not Enough Against 20th-Ranked Northeastern

Jack Hughes scored the only goal of the game and Devon Levi had 25 saves to give 20th-ranked Northeastern a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Colorado College Saturday at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.

Hughes scored off a rebound after a shot by Jordan Harris from the right point was saved by CC goalie Dominic Basse with 5:57 remaining in the third period to spoil a possible weekend sweep of nationally-ranked teams after the Tigers defeated 10th-ranked Boston College, 5-3, on Friday.

Despite giving up the goal, Basse was great throughout the entire game, finishing with 28 saves, including some spectacular stops in the second period.

"Dom was fantastic tonight," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "He made some really big saves in big moments for us."

After Basse faced just one shot during the Huskies' lone power play of the second period, he saved a point-blank shot from Ty Jackson and another in front of the crease by Sam Colangelo.

The Huskies outshot CC, 20-13, in the first two periods, but the Tigers tried to get some momentum in the third and held a 12-9 advantage in shots the final 20 minutes. Bryan Yoon led the Tigers with a career-high four shots. Colorado College had four shots saved by Levi in the final 2:14 with Basse on the bench in favor of an extra attacker.

Each team had a power-play opportunity in each of the final two periods, but couldn't get anything going. Northeastern attempted four shots with the man advantage, while CC only had one.

"This was a different game from last night," Mayotte said. "Tonight was a puck management game and it came down to who was going to blink first. It was hard to get through the neutral zone. We had a couple of 3-on-2 rushes but didn't materialize."

The Tigers return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series with Air Force. The Battle for the Pikes Peak Trophy begins on Friday, Oct. 29, at Cadet Ice Arena, followed by a game on Oct. 30 at Ed Robson Arena.
