Jack Millar scored his first goal of the season and
Dominic Basse made 27 saves as Colorado College battled to a 1-1 draw with St. Lawrence Saturday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Â
After putting up 41 shots in a 2-1 defeat Friday night, the Tigers only attempted seven in a scoreless first period on Saturday.
Â
The game opened up a bit in the second period and Basse came up huge with back-to-back saves midway through the frame to keep the Saints off the board. St. Lawrence held a 21-11 advantage in shots through 40 minutes but neither team found the back of the net.
Â
"Basse was a rock back there for us in the second period," head coach
Kris Mayotte said. "That's great to see."
Â
The Tigers came out firing in the third period, starting with
Chase Foley finding himself all alone through the slot four minutes in, but SLU goalie Emil Zetterquist got a pad on it. About 90 seconds later, Luc Salem took a pass from Chris Pappas and fired a shot from the right circle for a 1-0 Saints lead.
Â
CC had several opportunities to even the score following Salem's goal, including a breakaway by
Tyler Coffey, who sent his shot over the net, and a point-blank chance by
Noah Prokop that Zetterquist knocked away.
Â
The Tigers, who outshot SLU 19-7 in the third period and overtime, finally got on the board when
Jack Millar's wrist shot from the right point found its way through traffic and over Zetterquist's glove at the 11:57 mark. Foley earned his second point of the season on the play, while freshman
Tommy Middleton notched his first collegiate point.
Â
"Our guys did all the right things tonight, we punched back and we all got on the same page," Mayotte said. "They were saying all the right things on the bench then they went out and executed and gave us a chance to win."
Â
SLU's Jordan Steinmetz had a great look with 20 seconds left, but Basse stood tall and regulation ended even at 1-1.
Â
CC's
Logan Will found himself all alone in front of Zetterquist in the first 10 seconds of the five-minute 3v3 overtime period, but couldn't capitalize and each team had only one shot the rest of the way.
Â
With the late flurry, CC outshot St. Lawrence, 30-28, led by a career-high six shots from
Connor Mayer. Ashton Fry led the Saints with five. Zetterquist finished with 29 saves and both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
Â
The Tigers head to the East Coast next weekend to take on Union College, Oct. 15-16.
