Tigers Play First 0-0 Game in Program History

Colorado College made history against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth Saturday night at Amsoil Arena. For the first time in the 83-year history of the hockey program, the Tigers played a game that finished with a 0-0 score.

After 65 minutes with no scoring, the game officially ended in a tie and each team collected a point in the NCHC standings. The Bulldogs picked up the extra point by winning the three-player shootout, 1-0.

Noah Cates put the only puck in the net during the first round of the shootout against CC's Matt Vernon, who got his first start of the 2021-22 campaign.

Kobe Roth sent his shootout attempt wide and Vernon stopped Carter Loney, while UMD goalie Ryan Fanti stopped shots from Jordan Biro, Matthew Gleason and Stanley Cooley in the shootout.

Vernon was outstanding in posting the first shutout of his career. He saved all 30 shots during regulation and overtime, including a pair of spectacular stops late in the second period with UMD on the power play.

"Matt was absolutely incredible tonight," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "The thing with him is that he works hard every single day. He has been preparing for this opportunity."

The Tigers (2-7-3, 0-3-1 NCHC) had a couple of good looks during a power play in the first period, including a shot from Biro that clanged off the crossbar.

Fanti, who has posted a shutout in each of his last three games, finished with 26 saves for the Bulldogs (7-2-1, 2-1-1 NCHC).

"It was a solid game, both teams played well," Mayotte said. "I don't think we gave them much. For the most part we kept them to the outside and we had some good looks. The thing that continues to impress our staff is that we can make the adjustments."

The Tigers are idle until a weekend series against the Omaha Mavericks at Baxter Arena, Dec. 3-4.
