Early Goal Not Enough Against No. 7 North Dakota

Seventh-ranked North Dakota notched four consecutive goals after giving up an early score to Colorado College and defeated the Tigers, 5-2, Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.

The Fighting Hawks scored twice on the power play and added an empty-net goal, while Mark Senden, Riese Gaber and Chris Jandric each posted a pair of assists for North Dakota (12-6, 7-2 NCHC).

Junior transfer Noah Prokop opened the scoring with his first goal as a Tiger just 3:08 into the contest. Tommy Middleton sent Prokop a pass from behind the net and Prokop deposited it past UND goalie Zach Driscoll.

The Tigers (3-9-3, 1-5-1 NCHC) kept the momentum through the first half of the first period, but Driscoll kept it a one goal game until Louis Jamernik evened things up at the 14:09 mark. Cooper Moore sent a shot from the point that was saved by CC goalie Dominic Basse, but Jamernik found the puck in the slot and beat Basse.

"The first 10 minutes we were good" head coach Kris Mayotte said. "We get a lead and were outshooting them. Then we draw a penalty nine minutes in but didn't do much on the power play. Their response was strong after that penalty kill."

North Dakota then took advantage of a pair of CC penalties to take a two-goal lead.

Following a roughing call to Jordan Biro with 2:15 left in the opening frame, Matteo Costantini scored from the left circle after Riese Gaber's shot from the right circle was saved by Basse to take the lead for good.

The Fighting Hawks extended the lead to a pair just 1:04 into the second period with another power-play goal. Gaber sent a cross-ice pass to Jake Schmaltz, who placed a wrister past Basse from the top of the left circle.

"We weather the storm and think we can get out of the first period 1-1," Mayotte said. "Then we take a penalty with just over two minutes left and another one later. In just two minutes of game time, it's 3-1."

Basse, who posted his first career shutout last Saturday at Omaha, kept CC within reach with a huge save on Tyler Kleven, who had a breakaway immediately after leaving the penalty box late in the middle frame.

UND's Nick Portz put the Fighting Hawks up 4-1 at the 7:43 mark of the third period, but CC captain Brian Hawkinson notched his third goal in the last two games to cut the deficit to two with 4:55 remaining. Jordan Biro sliced through center ice and flipped a pass to Hawkinson, who beat Driscoll from the right circle.

Gavin Hain closed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 54 seconds left on the clock.

"We have to respond tomorrow night," Mayotte said. "We found a recipe to be tough to play against, but we just weren't tonight. It doesn't matter who we go against, we need to play our game. I thought we let them get us off our game."

Each goalie finished the game with 28 saves. The Fighting Hawks were 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Tigers went 0-for-4. Hawkinson and Portz each had a game-high four shots.

The teams will face off again Saturday, Dec. 11, at Robson Arena, beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
