Tigers Fall at Denver

Cole Guttman scored a pair of power-play goals and Magnus Chrona had 31 saves to lead Denver to a 4-0 victory over Colorado College Saturday night at Magness Arena.

The contest was the 328th between the two teams, becoming the most-played college hockey rivalry in the country, surpassing Michigan and Michigan State (327).

With the victory, Denver retains the Gold Pan by virtue of winning its third game in this season's six-game series against the Tigers.

Denver's Carter Savoie skated behind the net and opened the scoring with a shot from the right circle that beat CC goalie Matt Vernon at the 7:08 mark of the first period.

Connor Caponi doubled the Pioneers' lead late in the opening frame by putting home a rebound with 29.3 seconds left on the clock.

The Pioneers (9-12-1) put the game out of reach in the second period as Guttman scored his two power-play goals in a span of 29 seconds. CC's Matthew Gleason was whistled for an indirect contact to the head penalty at the 9:38 mark, and Guttman hit an open net from the left circle just 12 seconds later. Then, after a high sticking call to Jack Millar at 10:10, Guttman poked a rebound past Vernon just nine seconds after that call.

Denver finished the game 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Tigers were blanked in eight man-advantage opportunities, the most power-play chances in a game since getting eight at Arizona State on Dec. 15, 2018.

CC held a 29-25 advantage in shots on goal, led by Ben Copeland, who tied his career-high with six for the second consecutive game. Grant Cruikshank followed with five and twice hit the pipe, while two other Tiger attempts hit the pipe as well. Vernon recorded 21 saves for the Tigers (4-16-2).

The two teams wrap up the regular season with another Thursday-Saturday series next week, beginning on Thursday, March 4, at Magness Arena.
