Colorado College's
Kevin Peterson appeared to have sent Sunday's game at Texas Lutheran University to overtime when he scored in the 88th minute, but the Bulldogs answered 90 seconds later to steal a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Gustafson Field.
Peterson struck for his first career goal after he collected a pass from
Miles Montgomery in the center of the box, turned and rifled a shot into the net from 10 yards out.
CC, which was playing for the second time this weekend, was planning its overtime strategy when TLU's Jared Esparza scored on a first-touch shot off Luis Green's cross with only 53 seconds remaining in regulation time.
"The end of the game was difficult to swallow," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "We knew the two games this weekend would stretch us to our physical limits. We played an excellent first half and while we were under pressure for much of the second half, the guys did well to dig deep and tie the game. The group showed some real grit and mental toughness, which we will need in Shreveport in two weeks."
The Tigers broke through in the 22nd minute when Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Caleb Weed was unable to control a shot by
Sajjan Singh and Montgomery blasted the rebound into the upper right corner from 12 yards out.
Montgomery recorded a goal and an assist in the same game for the second time this season and the third time in his career. Â
Colorado College had chances to double its lead during the next couple of minutes, but Weed turned aside shots by Montgomery and
Skyler Stark-Ragsdale for two of his seven saves.
Weed denied a shot by
Kiran Singh nearly six minutes into the second half, and nearly five minutes later the Bulldogs drew level on a goal from Nestor Ayala.
Texas Lutheran took its first lead in the 60th minute when Green scored on a breakaway after running down a long pass from Caleb McCausland.
The Tigers finished the game with a 16-14 edge in total shots and a 10-7 advantage in corner kicks.
