Penalty Kicks Lift Villanova Past Colorado College

Chloe O'Neill scored on a pair of penalty kicks and Megan McClay made seven saves to lift Villanova University over Colorado College in a non-conference women's soccer game on Friday afternoon.

O'Neill put the Wildcats on the board late in the 13th minute after Lily Byrne was called for a foul in the box on Villanova's second corner kick.

The Tigers launched nine of the next 10 shots, but before they could capitalize on the sustained pressure, Reagan Smith added an insurance goal a little more than eight minutes into the second half after taking a pass from Lauren Belcourt.

The Wildcats put the game away in the 80th minute when O'Neill scored from the spot for the second time.

At the other end of the pitch, McClay stopped every shot that CC put on frame, including three by senior captain Jacqui Hand.

Colorado College finished with a 15-9 advantage in total shots and a 7-6 edge in shots on target.

Villanova won eight corner kicks, compared to four for the Tigers.

Coaches Comments
"Again, a decent performance by us," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "We outshoot and out chance our opponent, but give up too many. Two penalties hurt us tonight and both I think were unjust. But we need to finish our chances and do our jobs. We've dug our hole, now we have to fill it in. We will keep grinding and I can guarantee we will be ready and primed for Cal Poly."

Colorado College Standouts
Jacqui Hand led the Tigers with five shots, three of which were on goal.
Coley Lyubenko and Haley Harnisch launched two shots apiece.
Taryn Benham made three saves for the Tigers

Villanova Standouts
Francesca Yanchuck had two shots for the Wildcats.
Megan McClay made seven saves for Villanova.

Next for the Tigers
Colorado College plays its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 5, when Cal Poly visits Stewart Field for noon MT kickoff.
