Tigers Blanked by No. 5 Denver

Ryan Barrow and Brett Stapley each collected a goal and an assist and Magnus Chrona made 19 saves to lead fifth-ranked Denver past Colorado College, 5-0, Friday night at Magness Arena.

The Pioneers took advantage of an early CC penalty to open the scoring. Cole Guttman gathered his own rebound in front of the net and put his second shot past Tiger goalie Dominic Basse at the 3:20 mark. The Tigers survived the remainder of the period and trailed by only one despite getting outshot, 13-3.

Denver took control of the game with three goals in the second period. The Pioneers doubled their lead when Stapley deflected a shot from Barrow past Basse 5:13 into the middle frame. That duo struck again later, this time Barrow took a cross ice pass from Stapley and scored from just outside the left post to make it 3-0 at the 12:43 mark.

Cameron Wright notched a power-play goal with just over four minutes to play in the period for a 4-0 lead. Basse had 27 saves in the first two periods before giving way to Matt Vernon at the start of the third.

"I thought our goalies played well tonight," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "Basse was really good in the first and kept us in the game."

Carter Mazur scored on a rebound after Vernon saved a shot from Justin Lee 5:21 into the third period for the final margin.

Denver outshot the Tigers, 40-19, and connected on two of its three power-play opportunities. Colorado College was 0-for-1 with a man advantage.

"We weren't willing to do the things to play with the puck," Mayotte added. "It's detail stuff, like not finishing hits. They just skated by us and we allowed them to create the turnovers tonight."

The two teams will resume the Battle for The Gold Pan on Saturday at Ed Robson Arena, beginning at 6 p.m.
